The
Adventure
By Caitlyn McConnell
Earl the
young polar bear was tired of seeing just snow. The exhilarating light of
adventure gleamed in his eyes as he packed up his things and sprinted off into
the darkness. After wandering around for a couple of hours he decided to call
it a night and slept on a hard block of ice. Bad choice.
Next
morning he woke up to brilliant sunlight.
Summer was approaching, the ice and the snow were melting. Earl got up,
stretched, and felt the ice he was standing on wobble dangerously. He looked
down and saw that the ice below him was floating in the middle of the ocean. He
bolted around the ice in his panic, trying to find some land he could possibly
swim to. Suddenly, Earl slipped, and he was thrown merclissly into the splashing
water below him. The moment he hit
the water, he knew it was home. He
joyfully swam through the water, doing summersaults as he went. Suddenly he
spotted a glint of silver. He quickly swam toward it, noticing as he did so
that the waves had become harsher ad stronger. He swam rapidly to the suface to get some air, and then
dived back down again. The glint of silver was coming nearer and nearer
until... he found himself in the company
of a whole school of fish! He swam
into the silver mass greedily devouring the fish one by one. Then, ÒTHUD! Ó a net fell onto the ocean floor
trapping all the fish, and Earl. The terrified polar bear roared and roared as he was lifted slowly up,
up ,up, to the sparkling water above. He slashed, snarled and bit at the ropes
that bound him captive , but it made no difference. When he was completely out
of the water, he saw a big brown piece of land! He ceased his roaring and
waited quietly as he was tugged onto the mysterious land.
When the net was on the boat he saw a couple of mysterious animals gibbering
to each other in a language he couldnÕt understand. ÒBingo!Ó yelled Bob, and then he spotted Earl. ÒChris!Ó he shouted, ÒWe have a Polar
Bear!Ó ÒWhat should we do?Ó Bob asked.
ÒReturn
him to land of courseÓ replied Chris, ÒThereÕs some land over there, lets free him.Ó
Bob agreed, so they sailed toward the mountains, that were miles away from
them. Earl, who hadnÕt listened to any of the conversation, (how could he if he
didnÕt know English) was shocked to find that the ÒlandÓ was moving! He settled
down, full to bursting with fish, and was soon fast asleep. Hooonk! The ship
stopped abruptly. Earl woke with a start. The men emptied the fish into a huge
crate, leaving Earl alone. They opened the net, and the Polar bear cautiously
crept out, looked back at them, and then sprinted off into the darkness.
